About me

I'm Wonne Back.

After secondary school I started working as a lighting technician, touring with well-known Dutch bands as well as working at the Melkweg and Paradiso venues in Amsterdam.

In 2005 I began studying physiotherapy at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, graduating in 2009.

During my physiotherapy training I took part in an honours programme at the AMC (Amsterdam UMC). It was largely thanks to the dissection-room practicals there that I was able to build a really thorough 3D understanding of human anatomy. To this day that gives me an advantage: my anatomical knowledge is strongly developed, which lets me form a clear picture of what's actually happening in muscles and joints as they move.

In the years that followed I went on to teach anatomy classes myself in the AMC's dissection rooms.

After qualifying, I started working at Waterland Fysiotherapie. There I gained a great deal of experience guiding patients through rehabilitation, and it's also where I began focusing on headache complaints, training in Dry Needling – both Level 1 (a foundational course covering common complaints) and Level 2 (specifically for patients with headache and/or neck/jaw problems).

In the years after that I specialised further in treating headache, neck and lower back pain and the radiating complaints that often go along with them. In 2015 I trained in the Watson method – the most successful treatment approach available for tension-type headache and migraine – and I've been applying it successfully with patients ever since.

At the Back & Neck Centre, where I started working in 2016, I went on to specialise further in McKenzie therapy and ultrasound imaging.

By combining the methods above, virtually all forms of headache can be effectively treated or reduced to an acceptable level.

In 2020 I joined Fysiotherapie Schinkelkade as a partner. Here we work together with 5 other therapists under one roof, as a team that complements each other well.

I still do lighting work too. Since starting my physiotherapy studies I've kept touring with bands, and in recent years that's been with Jeugd van Tegenwoordig. You can see my work at www.backlights.nl

I live with my wife and our two young daughters in the picturesque village of Broek in Waterland.

My approach

In my view, modern society spends far too much time bent over and far too little time stretched out!

Laptop work, long stretches looking at an iPad or phone, Netflix on the sofa, and even reading a book or knitting – all activities that put a real strain on the neck and lower back. It may not sound like much at first, but a day of “doing nothing” is already something the neck and lower back don't appreciate.

This often results in complaints originating in the neck, such as headaches, neck pain, shoulder complaints, dizziness or tinnitus. From the back, this can radiate into the buttock, hip, groin or further down the leg, all the way to the toes.

A poor posture that has been present for so many years isn't easy to change. Postural advice is important here, but also very hard to keep up. McKenzie therapy works largely with "repeated movements" – performing a specific exercise very frequently. Often it's a simple exercise, but the challenge lies in doing it 5 to 6 times a day. This ensures that the load on the neck or back is reduced with great regularity, day after day, so it can increasingly be relieved.

Combining McKenzie, Dry Needling and the Watson Method brings about fast and lasting reduction of complaints.
